Change Jobs in a Downturn? Actually, That Might Be Your Smartest Move

Is this it?

That’s the quiet question so many people are asking themselves in 2025. You might not hate your job. But it’s not lighting you up either. You feel under-challenged, undervalued, or just… off track. And yet, the thought of leaving? Terrifying. Your brain wants safety. Your gut wants change. Welcome to the most human career dilemma of all.

And not just about work. When life feels uncertain, our instinct is to pause, play it safe, and hold tight to the familiar. That’s natural. It’s protective. It makes sense. But that instinct can quietly turn into a habit. And when it does, the life you want begins to drift just out of reach. It’s understandable if changing jobs feels like one risk too many.

So, should you really put off switching careers just because the economy’s shaky?

We don’t think so.

Why? Because staying put comes with serious costs. A role that doesn’t challenge you or reflect your values can quietly chip away at your motivation, your creativity, and even your confidence.

Our Career Change whitepaper explores why this moment might be more promising than it looks, and asks the questions that matter: What’s holding you back? What might happen if you stop waiting? What if the bigger risk is staying still?

Here are some of the main ones—and why they’re not as fixed as they feel:

Am I waiting for the economic winds to change?
What if the smartest move is the one most people are too afraid to make? More jobs are out there than you might think. That means more opportunity, but only if you're not late to the party. Moving before the crowd could give you the edge: more choice, more leverage, and more freedom to shape the next chapter of your career. In other words, act early and you'll be in demand.

What’s that quiet voice telling me?
Is it burnout? Boredom? Or just the sense that there must be something more? The numbers back it up: our report found that most people want better pay, more balance, and work that means something. Grafton’s parent company Gi Group Holding’s 2025 Global Candidate Survey found that pay or benefits, work-life balance, and misalignment with personal values are the biggest factors driving people’s dissatisfaction. So, you’re not alone in wanting more, and you’re not selfish for wanting it. You spend a third of your life at work. That time should matter.

Am I following a path that no longer fits?
So why do we still hold ourselves to outdated career paths? Careers aren’t linear anymore. The world is changing fast, and with that comes permission to change direction. The pace of change is relentless, but that also creates opportunity. Employers are increasingly open to hiring candidates from different industries if they bring curiosity, energy, and transferable skills.

Am I underestimating my current skills?
You don’t need the perfect CV to move roles anymore, and you don’t need to tick every box. Employers want authenticity: people who care, learn quickly, and bring fresh energy. Your story matters more than your checklist.

As Delia Pesenti, HR Director at HP Italy, puts it in our report: "Soft skills are probably even more important than practical ones." That’s great news if you’re feeling underqualified. You’re probably way more ready than you think.

What could I learn today that could change my prospects tomorrow?
The quickest way to shift your career is to shift your skill set. And you don’t need a degree or a company budget to do it. With platforms like Udemy, EdX, Coursera, and FutureLearn often offering free courses, it’s never been easier or more affordable to boost your skills. Workers will need to reboot their skills 8 to 10 times during their career, so it’s a good habit to start.

What’s really holding me back?
Fear? Doubt? Time? Whatever’s dragging on your momentum, you can overcome it. If time is tight, focus your energy: update your CV and LinkedIn in one short burst, turn on job alerts, and scan them daily. Let your network know you’re looking. And if you’re feeling unqualified, you’re not alone: two-thirds of professionals experience impostor syndrome. The key is to keep moving forward even when your inner critic is loud.

So, what’s one small step you can take right now?

You don’t have to have it all figured out. But you do need to move. Download our Career Change whitepaper and start your shift from passive to proactive today.
